Backpacking to the Gili Islands, IndonesiaPosted on 10/01/2015
Located off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, are three small islands; Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. Collectively, they are known as the Gili Islands. Being a cheaper alternative to Bali, these islands have become a popular go-to destination of backpackers over the years. Although not as quiet or exclusive, the Gili Islands have a lot to offer vacationers.
Aside from being less expensive than staying in Bali for a quiet beach holiday, the Gili Islands have made a name for their beautiful beaches and scrumptious seafood. Backpackers and budget travelers can attest that the Gili Islands can really give a good value for your money as you enjoy the sand, sea, and sun! But aside from soaking up the sun, other activities you can try are as follows:
- Scuba diving (they say dive spots here are better than Bali's)
- Try the local bars
- Give water sports a try (i.e. parasailing, waterskiing, wake-boarding)
- Go kayaking
- Visit the sea turtles in the Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno hatcheries
- Go cycling around the islands
- Try freediving
Truly, a holiday in the Gili Islands can give you a bang for your buck. Make this your next holiday destination!
